Kevin Carder, left, and Jerad McLean, rightBoone Central juniors Jerad McLean and Kevin Carder have been selected to attend the American Legion Cornhusker Boys’ State in Lincoln, May 31 through June 6, 2009. Boys’ State will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln downtown campus.

The annual citizenship program is designed to provide youths with a better understanding of how city, county and state governments operate.

Boys’ State is set up as a functional “51st state” and each boy learns how government subdivisions operate by actually doing the job. Participants will campaign for offices, hold elections, take part in band and chorus, compete in athletics and will be involved in other varied activities as part of the citizenship training program. They will set up their own state government and draft bills.

Jerad is the son of Mark and Jana Niewohner of Albion. He is involved in Football, Basketball, Track, Wrestling, Academic Decathlon, BC Club and FBLA.

Kevin is the son of Jim and Laurie Carder. His activities include Cross Country, Track, Speech, FBLA, REACH, Student Council, National Honor Society, Junior Class President, High School Musical, Band, All State Honor Band and CYO.

Spencer McBride, son of Shawn and Sandra McBride, has been chosen as the alternate in the event that one of the other students cannot participate. He is involved in Football, Track, School Musical, Academic Decathlon and ONP Summer Research.
