Although competing in their third track & field meet in six days, the Boone Central Cardinals fared well at the Dragon Relays in Madison Thursday, April 9.
The Madison relay event is usually the season kick-off for many area teams, but was postponed by inclement weather this year. Thursday, teams from seven schools vied in the unique competition.
“The Madison Relays is an interesting meet. All events are run as relays, where the times and distances are added together and we, as coaches, must try to fit our athletes into the best possible groups to gain team points,” commented Cardinal Coach Kris Pestel. “We felt, going into the meet, our girls had a chance to win that side of the meet and that they boys would place in the top half.
“We fell a little short on the girls side, finishing runner-up, and the boys finished in the middle of the pack.”
The Boone Central girls were barely nipped by West Holt in the competition for the top spot, 110-104. The Cardinal boys scored 66 points, placing fifth. Logan View won the boys division with 90 points.
Boone Central scored victories in six girls events – the discus and shot put relays, long jump relay, distance medley, the 240 hurdle shuttle and 400 meter relay. Erica Carder also won the individual 3200 meter run. The Cardinals took first in three boys events – the discus relay, 400 meter relay and 800 meter relay.
“Once again in this meet, the girls and boys were able to place in every event we entered,” noted Pestel. “Overall, we are again proud of how the kids competed and are pleased with their efforts and accomplishments.”
