Unlike the horrendous conditions for the season-opening Mansfield Invitational, athletes enjoyed plenty of sunshine and moderate temperatures during a quadrangular track & field meet hosted April 7 at the Boone Central athletic field.
Solid Central City squads won the girls and boys team scoring competitions with the host Boone Central Cardinals placing second in both divisions. Also competing in the meet were West Holt and Madison.
With better weather came better results for local athletes.
“With the good weather came some good performances,” acknowledged Boone Central Coach Kris Pestel. “As a team, we had 86 season-best performances and 50 career bests.
“This is a tough week, having had the Mansfield meet Saturday, then competing again Tuesday and Thursday, but the kids are pushing on.
“The girls had 43 season bests, 20 career bests and five event winners,” Pestel noted. “The boys also posted 43 season bests, along with 30 career bests and two event winners.”
Four Cardinal girls had victories and runner-up finishes to pace Boone Central, which finished just seven points behind Central City (97-90).
Senior Emily Wells won the discus (108-7) and placed second in the shot put (33-4), senior Halie Smith captured the 3200 meter run (13:10.6) while finishing runner-up in the 1600 (6:03.3). Junior Megan Bygland was first in the 300 meter low hurdles (50.7) and second in the 100 highs (16.9) and soph Bobbi Beckwith took the 200 meter dash (27.6) and was runner-up in the 100 (13.1).
The Cardinal 4×100 relay team of Bygland, Beckwith, Savannah Baker and Chancee Nolan placed first in a time of 54.1.
BC also had second-place performances by Sara Wells (discus, 102-8), Emily Carder (triple jump, 30-6½), Paige Kolm (pole vault, 7-2) and Breann Thorberg (200, 28.7). The Card 4×400 relay was second in 4:28.6.
On the boys side, Boone Central event winners were junior Kevin Carder in the 3200 meter run (10:46.1) and Keenan Howell in the pole vault (10-0).
The Cards had two individual second-place performances and took runner-up in a pair of relays. Kalvin Zoucha was second in the discus (126-1) and Michael Schmitz runner-up in the shot put (41-6¼). BC was second in the 4×100 relay (47.6) and 4×800 (9:34.6).
