With Nebraska’s unpredictable spring weather finally cooperating, senior Bryce Morgan and his Cardinal golf teammates opened the 2009 season with a busy week of competition April 15-18.
Morgan capped the opening week of action by winning the Boone Central Invitational Saturday at the Albion Country Club. The two-time state tournament participant also registered the low score in a dual vs. Ord Thursday after placing fourth in the Ord Invitational Wednesday.
“It was nice to see Bryce play well in his final home event,” commented Card Coach Jesse Brodersen. “Kade Leetch had a good second nine at our invite, as well.
“Dusty Dozler, Tanner Warner and Collin Chaney all put forth a good effort and I’m looking forward to the progress of the team over the next month.”
With Boone Central fielding an extremely inexperienced team outside of Morgan, the Cardinals did not figure to be a contender in tournament team standings early in the 2009 campaign.
The Cards turned in a very solid effort Saturday on their home course, however, and placed seventh in the 12-team field with a 347 total. Norfolk Catholic won the BC Invite with a 315 team score.
Morgan fired a 37 on his first nine, then came back with a par-36 round to finish with a one-over 73, two strokes in front of Catholic’s Keith Vrbicky.
Leetch shot an 85 (45-40) to finish 21st among individuals. Warner (93), Dozler (96) and Chaney (98) were all in the top 50 Saturday.
Boone Central defeated Ord in their dual competition at the ACC Thursday, 185-191. Morgan again led the way with a 38 in blustery conditions. Dozler (47), Chaney (49) and Leetch (51) rounded out the team score.
At the Ord Invitational Wednesday, Morgan took fourth place with a 76 – just two strokes out of first – and Boone Central placed 10th in team competition.
