Boone Central students demonstrate water testing

Mitch Osborn with students Lauren Bygland and Shelby Travis.PriarieLand RC&D Council Board of Directors spent part of Earth Day last Wednesday afternoon at the Olson Nature Preserve (ONP), learning about the preserve and water quality research being conducted along the Beaver River by high school students.

Mitch Osborn, science teacher at Boone Central, discussed water quality testing conducted by his high school chemistry students each year since 1993.

Water quality research was initially funded through a grant, and students from 12 schools were involved. However, the grant funds have now expired. The Boone Central students continue to use equipment funded by the grant to study water quality at three locations on the Beaver seven times each year. The testing locations are at ONP, at Albion and at Boone.
