Card Golfers 5th In Mid-State

Bryce Morgan at Quail RunAlthough Hartington Cedar Catholic and Norfolk Catholic distanced themselves from the remainder of the Mid-State Conference field, Boone Central was in the thick of the battle for third place, eventually finishing fifth in the meet held at Norfolk’s Fairplay Golf Course Saturday, April 25.
The Cardinals compiled a team score of 341, just four strokes back of fourth-place Battle Creek and seven behind Wayne. Cedar Catholic won the conference team championship with a 316 score, four strokes ahead of Norfolk Catholic.
Boone Central also had one of the highest individual placers, but it wasn’t senior stalwart Bryce Morgan. Card freshman Kade Leetch tied for second and received a fifth-place medal after ties were broken using a handicapped scorecard playoff.
“We had our best results of the season to date, so we are making progress,” said Boone Central Coach Jesse Brodersen. “Bryce was obviously disappointed in not medaling, but Kade did a great job and is improving everyday. Dusty Dozler also had his best round of the year, which is promising.”
Leetch opened with a front-nine 41, then sizzled to a 37 on his second nine, lowest finishing nine among all competitors. He finished tied at 78 with four other golfers.
Morgan, Boone Central Invite winner last week and 10th in the 2008 Mid-State meet, struggled to a front-nine 43 Saturday and finished at 83, two strokes out of a chance at a medal. Dozler put together a 42/47-89 and Tanner Warner rounded out the team score with 43/48-91.
Boone Central’s strong showing in the conference meet followed a disappointing outing in the Scotus Invitational Thursday.
The Cardinals placed 13th in the 17-team field, shooting a team score of 383 over the challenging Quail Run layout in Columbus.
Morgan led BC with an 85, one stroke out of the Top 10 medalists. No other Card golfers broke 90 and three were in triple digits.
