Decoration Day event successful at museum

Charles Tiede, World War II veteran, recounts his experiences during a Memorial Day interview at the Boone County Museum.

A very successful “Decoration Day” event was held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, at the Boone County Museum.

A total of 60 to 70 people attended the afternoon event, which featured ice cream sundaes, tours of the museum and digital video interviews with Boone County World War II era veterans about their wartime experiences.

“We received many good comments and I was very pleased with the way things went,” said Pat Boilesen, president of the Boone County Historical Society. “We hope to have a similar event at the museum on an annual basis.”

The historical society hopes to make copies of the video interviews available to families of the veterans, while keeping the original copies in the museum as historical records, she said.

The entire museum complex was open to visitors, and tours were given. June Bentley registered the visitors, and ice cream sundaes were served by Pastor Don Dennison at the one-room school. Other historical society board members gave tours and explained the exhibits.
