After losing their first two volleyball matches of 2009, the Boone Central Lady Cardinals were looking for some good news Saturday as they hosted their annual invitational tournament.
After a slow start, the Cards found that positive spark, winning two matches and placing second in the competitive meet.
“I was really happy how the weekend went,” commented Boone Central Coach Erin Eickhoff. “The girls worked really hard. It was great to see that moment when everything just clicked.”
“We have ups and downs – and we’ll have some more – but I’m confident the girls will be able to get through anything as long as they stick together. They have a trust and bond that will be hard for any team to break.
“If they stay on this road, the wins will come,” Eickhoff added. “It won’t be an easy season, but I am confident we’ll be a successful team. This weekend showed the girls are fighters and can dig in and work hard.”
Saturday’s opening match began on an ominous note as Schuyler handed the Cardinals a 25-13 loss. Boone Central regrouped with a hard-fought 25-20 victory in set two and carried that momentum to a 25-19 win in the decisive final set.
Card serving was much-improved from previous matches, with just four errors in 62 service attempts. BC hit .397 and had just four errors on service receptions.
Boone Central moved to the championship contest with a 2-1 victory over O’Neill.
The Cardinals served at 90% efficiency with five aces, made just six reception errors and hit at a blistering .446 clip.
Boone Central came up short in its quest for the tourney title as a tough Lakeview squad defeated the Cards 25-15, 25-17 in the day’s final match.
Although Boone Central hit .535 in the contest, the Cards had trouble getting their attack untracked with just 28 hit attempts.
