In 2008, Lindsay Holy Family/Newman Grove runners were crowned Class D individual girls and boys state cross country champions while the Bulldogs captured the D boys team title and a runner-up award on the girls side.
With nearly everyone returning from those teams and an impressive regular season under their belts, hopes were high that Holy Family/Newman Grove competitors could duplicate or exceeed that success at Friday’s 2009 Nebraska State Cross Country Championships at the Kearney Country Club.
The Bulldogs fell just slightly short of matching those 2008 heights this time around, but still turned in the most impressive all-around results among Class D entrants.
For the second consecutive season, Holy Family sophomore Andrea Weeder ran away with the individual gold medal and the Lady Bulldogs placed second to Crofton, which captured its fourth straight team title.
With Hastings St. Cecelia and Ainsworth dropping to the Class D ranks this season, the Bulldog boys were unable to defend their 2008 championship, placing third, while senior Kevin Weeder just missed a second straight gold medal, finishing runner-up to Dillon Eckel of Gibbon in a memorable duel.
“This group worked very hard and had a great overall season,” praised Holy Family/Newman Grove Coach Rich Weeder. “I’m just so proud of what they accomplished this year.”
