Winter storm hits area Tuesday, Wednesday

Northeast Nebraska’s first major winter storm of the season began Tuesday and continued into Wednesday, Dec. 8-9, with blowing and drifting snow creating difficult driving conditions.

Area schools canceled classes for the day on Tuesday. Albion City Council meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday night, was postponed to Monday night, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

The storm, moving from southwest to northeast, started with light snow on Tuesday morning. The forecast called for winds increasing from nine miles per hour up to 25 miles per hour. Snowfall was expected to continue into Wednesday morning, leaving accumulations from five to 10 inches in central Nebraska. Boone County was included in a blizzard warning for Tuesday and Tuesday night.

More than six inches of snow had accumulated in Albion by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
