City Council approves health plan

Albion City Council approved a new group health insurance plan for city employees during its regular meeting Monday night, Dec. 14.

Ron Erickson of Farm Bureau Financial Services had good news for the council. The city had been approved as a “preferred group” by Blue Cross/Blue Shield for the health savings account plan, which could save the city about $150 per month from the previous quote.

The council approved the new plan, which will reduce the cost to $833 per month for each covered employee. The city has nine covered employees, so its total monthly premium will be $7,498 starting Jan. 1, 2010.

If the city had stayed with the previous individual HSA plans, the monthly premium would have been over $1,000 per month per covered employee.
