Learning experiences continued for a young Boone Central wrestling team last week with the Cardinals competing in a dual at Creighton and the York Quad.
With just six varsity wrestlers, Boone Central earned three victories at Creighton Thursday and followed with three runner-up finishes at York Friday.
The Cardinals will host two of their three 2009-10 home meets this week. Grand Island Northwest will travel to Albion for a dual Thursday night (6:30) and the Boone Central Dual Tournament will be held Saturday (8:30 a.m.).
The shorthanded Cardinals were defeated 48-18 December 10 at Creighton. The teams matched up in just five weight classes with the hosts winning three of those contests.
“On the bright side of having only six varsity wrestlers, half of them brought home a victory,” commented Card Coach Dale Bonge. “Wins by pin from Jake Meyer and Tanner Anderson, plus a forfeit win by Bobby Stopak highlighted a short dual.”
Boone Central ran into an even stiffer challenge at York Friday. Central City ran away with the title at the York Quad with 235 points, with Seward (102), York (84) and Boone Central (56) rounding out the team standings.
“Defending state champion Central City showed they may be as strong as they were last year in running away with the meet,” Bonge said. “York and Seward also had some solid wrestlers.
“Matt Spieker and Logan Frey received their varsity baptisms by fire. Logan did pin one of his opponents.
“We have a ways to go yet and much to learn.”
