OPPD considers purchase of wind power from Petersburg

In a meeting Thursday, Jan. 14, the Omaha Public Power District Board of Directors was to consider a long-term power purchase agreement with Third Planet Windpower Petersburg, LLC, for 40.5 megawatts of wind-generated electricity.

A group from Petersburg and Boone County planned to attend the meeting.

If the power purchase agreement is approved, Third Planet would build 27 wind towers of 1.5 megawatts each in the area east of Petersburg where the company has been negotiating lease agreements with landowners for several years.

The proposed project would generate 40.5 megawatts of electricity, enough to supply about 12,000 homes, and would be in addition to the 81 megawatt field being developed by Midwest Wind Energy.
