Boone County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a declaration of disaster for the county in the wake of blizzards causing excessive snow removal and maintenance costs for the period of Dec. 22, 2009 to Jan. 6, 2010.
The county declaration will be forwarded to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, and the county could be eligible for reimbursement of some extra costs if a statewide disaster is declared.
County Emergency Manager Mike Thiem and County Highway Superintendent Darrel Thorin provided an initial estimate of $130,000 for county expenses during the 16-day period.
Most of the additional cost is for snow removal on county roads, which includes labor, equipment use, fuel costs and repairs.
