The 2009-10 wrestling season has often seemed like an uphill battle for an extremely inexperienced Boone Central mat squad.
The Cardinals continued to compete and prepare last week for the crucial final stretch of the campaign, with conference and district tournaments looming the first two weeks of February.
Boone Central wrestlers gained additional experience in the Neligh/Oakdale Freshman-Sophomore/JV Invite, along with competing in a tough 15-team David City Invitational Friday.
The Cardinals will host the annual Boone Central Invitational this Saturday in Albion (10 a.m.).
Neligh/Oakdale
“We had a good overall experience at this meet against wrestlers that have about the same amount of experience as ours do,” commented Boone Central Coach Dale Bonge.
Two Cardinal competitors – Logan Frey and Jon Christo – won their weight classes at Neligh. Kody Maricle took runner-up honors and Sean Soll placed third.
David City Invite
Boone Central ran into tough competition and match-ups in the David City Invite, finishing 13th in team standings with 21 points.
“We won all the matches we were favored to win, plus one in which we were the underdog – that was good,” Bonge commented. “We lost all but that one match we were predicted to lose – that was not so good. The format and level of competition were not conducive to our young squad getting a lot of victories. There were areas of progress and a couple of areas we might have regressed,” he said. “Now we get back to the practice room and work on improvements for Saturday when we host our invitational.”
