With just seven wrestlers competing, Boone Central knew it couldn’t contend for the team title in the 2010 Mid-State Conference Tournament, but hoped to place several Cardinals on the medal stand.
On a tough Saturday in Norfolk, only sophomore Bobby Stopak was able to garner a victory in the annual conference competition, placing second at 103 pounds.
Boone Central finished 8th in team standings with 14 points.
“Not a banner day for the Cardinals,” Boone Central Coach Dale Bonge rued afterward. “We were in five matches we definitely had opportunities to win, but came up short. In our other matches, we were simply outgunned.
“Bobby was our only placewinner. In the finals he wrestled tough against a 27-4 foe, but a pair of penalty points for illegal holds proved to be the difference.
“Jacob Meyer wrestled well overall, but needed to put the finishing touches on his bouts, as he was within seconds of winning both,” Bonge noted. “In his first match, Jake had four points scored on him as time ran out to force overtime. In his second match, he was taken down at the buzzer to fall by one point.”
Bonge said there were several other bright spots on an otherwise dreary day for his inexperienced charges.
“Kody Maricle fell way behind early in his second match, but came back to score the final five points and dominate the third period,” he pointed out. “Dan Janzen held a 7-2 lead in the third period before getting reversed to his back and pinned.”
Boone Central will compete in the B-2 District meet Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at Schuyler.
