Boone Central Returns 9 State Track Qualifiers

spring-preseason-girls.jpgspring-preseason-boys.jpgWith talent, depth, experience and leadership, Boone Central’s girls and boys track & field teams have an optimistic outlook for the 2010 season.
Boone Central sent 15 athletes to the state track & field meet in 2009, one of its largest contingents in recent years, and nine of those competitors are back to anchor the Cardinal squads this spring.
BC also has fairly strong numbers – 29 boys and 27 girls – which should provide the depth to allow competitive scoring in larger meets.
The Cardinal girls had an outstanding 2009 campaign, highlighted by a Mid-State Conference championship over rivals Norfolk Catholic and Pierce. The Lady Cards return six state meet qualifiers to spearhead this year’s efforts – seniors Savannah Baker (long jump, 4×100, 4×400), Megan Bygland (100 & 300 hurdles, 4×100) and Alicia Getzfred (pole vault), junior Bobbi Beckwith (200 & 400 dashes, 4×100, 4×400) and sophomores Jaime Kennedy (4×100) and Breann Thorberg (4×400).
Other letterwinners back from the conference championship squad are senior Erica Carder, junior Sara Wells and sophomores Emily Carder, Maria Glidden and Jenna Lehmann.
“With the state qualifiers we return and the depth our team has, we are very excited for the upcoming season,” commented Boone Central Head Coach Kris Pestel. “We will need to develop our younger athletes to help solidify all areas of our team.”

While the Boone Central boys didn’t reach quite the conference and district heights of the Cardinal girls in 2009, they did have their own standout performances and bring back three state qualifiers to lead a team with abundant young talent.
Seniors Kevin Carder (3200), Nathan Olson (300 hurdles, 4×100) and Dustin Christo (4×100) are back after competing in the state meet and will give Pestel a nucleus to build around in 2010.
Carder placed third in the Mid-State 3200 meter run and took fourth at district before recording a personal-best time in the state meet. Olson placed third in the conference 300 meter intermediate hurdles and also had a personal best in the event in Omaha. Olson and Christo return from the district runner-up 4×100 team.

Other letterwinners returning for Boone Central this season are juniors Lane Anderson, Keenan Howell, Wade Reigle and Trey Sorell and sophomores Cole Luettel, Colton Mazour and Zach Wurdemann.
“We have a good number of athletes out this season and return the three state qualifiers, but the development of all our athletes will be the key to our season,” noted Pestel.
