Making history is rarely easy. The Boone Central girls track & field team will testify to that.
The annual Mid-State Conference Championships are always difficult. Compounding that asperity in Saturday’s event at Battle Creek were howling west winds gusting above 40 miles-per-hour.
Depsite those difficult conditions and testing competition, the BC Lady Cardinals dug deep to produce an inspirational team effort and captured their second consecutive conference track & field crown – a first in school history.
Boone Central compiled 128 points, holding off Pierce with a runner-up finish in the day’s final event (4-x-400 meter relay).
The Cardinal boys also had a solid day against some of the best track & field athletes in Northeast Nebraska, finishing fifth as nine competitors recorded 2010 personal-bests.
Boone Central’s point total in girls competition was nine in front of Pierce (119), with Norfolk Catholic third. Catholic ran away with the boys title, outscoring runner-up Pierce 143.5-96.5.
“The Mid-State is a very tough conference and we knew it would be another extremely competitive meet for both the girls and the boys,” commented Cardinal Coach Kris Pestel. “Prior to the meet, Coach Roberts challenged our athletes to get out of their comfort zone and really compete hard.
“All of our kids stepped up to that challenge.
“We knew coming in the girls had a chance to win again, but we had to have a few things happen,” Pestel noted. “We had to have depth with the ability to score more than one in many events and we had some outstanding performances to accomplish that.
“We were able to have two or more score in five events. We placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the 200 dash and 2nd, 3rd, 5th in the discus. It came down to the last event to hold off Pierce in the 4-x-400 relay.
“The girls also had 12 personal bests on a very windy day. Plus, the boys had nine personal bests and were able to place fifth.
“Because all of our athletes train together and support each other, this is a total Boone Central conference win!”
