While it isn’t a subject often discussed by economic developers, sewage treatment is seen by local leaders as one of the keys to Albion’s future development.
The capacity and age of the current wastewater plant have become a limiting factor in the city’s growth. Also, the plant is not equipped to meet new and future National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) treatment requirements for disinfection of sewage.
The process of replacement is long and a new plant will be expensive, but city officials say it is necessary.
Since 2008, the City of Albion has been working toward the eventual replacement of the present mechanical plant, which was built originally in 1963 and upgraded in 1971.
