NPPD substation work underway

Work is well underway on the new Nebraska Public Power District substation east of Petersburg.

Grading began earlier this year, and concrete foundations for structures were being poured last week.

The substation will serve two purposes. First, it will collect energy from the Laredo Ridge Wind Farm to be built in Petersburg and transmit the power into NPPD’s grid system.

Second, it will provide electricity for a pumping station on the Keystone XL TransCanada pipeline with 37 miles of transmission line to be constructed between Petersburg and Ericson.

Completion of the substation is expected for this October to support the wind farm that is to be in service by the end of 2010.
