More than 30 competitors entertained another large turnout of bullriding fans Saturday, July 3, at the 16th Annual Gateway to the Sandhills Bullride Classic held at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Albion.
The bullride competition has become a July 4th weekend staple in Albion, presented annually by the Albion FFA Alumni and Rodeo Rose Productions.
Following the initial qualifying rounds and the short round finals, Travis Vanlar of Fort Dodge, IA emerged as the 2010 champion with a score of 162.
Cody Sierks of Bakersfield, CA, the 2008 Gateway to the Sandhills champion, placed second with a 158 total. Buck Moon of Sargent (145) finished third, Joel Wilson of Boone, IA (76) was fourth and David Markly of Hoyt, KS and Trey Kerner of Sutherland (74) finished in a tie for fifth.
Judges for the 2010 competition were Jim McMillan and Pepper Rasmussen of Albion. Delores McMillan of Albion was the timer. Bull fighters for the event were Ryan Davis of Beaver City and Rob Miles of Lincoln, while rodeo clown Matt Zable of Ft. Dodge, IA provided comedy acts.
