Teams always want to finish their seasons on a high note, playing their best ball.
Boy, did the Albion Thunder accomplish that goal!
The Albion 16 & under girls softball squad put the final wrap on its 2010 summer campaign with an impressive runner-up finish at the Class D State Tournament July 16-18 at Hastings.
“The girls definitely played their best softball of the season,” acknowledged Thunder Coach Delmar Pelster.
Albion got state tourney play underway with a rousing 10-2 victory over Blair Friday, July 16. An opening round victory not only keeps a team from the long road of the elimination bracket, but also instills momentum and confidence. The Thunder followed Saturday by winning a 10-8 thriller over Wakefield in extra innings.League rival Creighton handed Albion its first loss Sunday, putting together a four-run second inning and five-run fifth in a 13-1 decision. The never-say-die Thunder bounced right back to hammer Gretna 13-1 and stay alive in the tourney. That put the Thunder in a championship showdown with Creighton and Albion forced its rival to the limit with an 8-3 victory. Albion’s championship bid fell short in the final contest as Creighton unleashed a 15-hit attack against the weary Thunder and scored a 14-5 victory.
