Success has been difficult to come by for a young, extremely inexperienced Boone Central volleyball team during the first half of the 2010 season, but Cardinal coaches have been pleased with their team’s enthusiasm, effort and improvement.
That effort paid off last week as Boone Central captured its first victory of the season in a Tuesday triangular meet in Albion.
After dropping a competitive, straight-set decision to Norfolk Catholic, the Cardinals faced Madison and defeated the Dragons 2-0 to get in the win column.
“We had a solid start against Norfolk Catholic and kept it close for a while,” commented Boone Central Coach Erin Eickhoff. “Catholic pulled away with solid serving and aggressive hitting and we just couldn’t keep up.
“Against Madison, the girls came out and played with determination and heart. They had so much fun on the court and it showed in the outcome of the match.
“All of the Cardinals were solid in their serving and passing. It was a fantastic match!”
Boone Central dropped to 1-10 with three losses in the Central City Invitational tournament Saturday. The Cards opened with a 15-25, 14-25 loss to Gibbon. Host Central City defeated Boone Central 25-23, 25-12. The Cardinals finished the day with a hard-fought 20-25, 25-22, 9-25 loss to Raymond Central.
