Card Harrier Teams Strong In Mid-State

Boone Central cross country teams that have made strides throughout the season hope they are peaking at the right time.
In a final prep for this week’s C-2 District meet in Albion, the Cardinals scored impressive finishes in the conference portion of the Bloomfield Invitational/Mid-State Conference meet Friday at Bloomfield.
Overcoming unseasonably warm temperatures, the Boone Central girls finished as Mid-State runners-up, just four points behind champion Wayne (35-39). It first appeared the Cardinal boys had also scored a runner-up finish behind Wayne. However, a score correction was announced Monday showing Boone Central in a three-way tie with Norfolk Catholic and Pierce. In the tie-breaker procedure, the final order placed the Knights second, Pierce third and the Cardinals fourth. In the overall Bloomfield Invite standings, both BC squads placed fourth.
“The conditions Friday were extremely tough! The heat was way too high – well above 90 degrees,” commented Card Coach Tom Dickey. “This made planning race strategy very difficult.
“We needed to perform well in preparation for the district meet. With so many teams in this meet also in the district, we needed to see how we stacked up against them.
“I felt our kids did a marvelous job, considering the conditions,” Dickey praised. “They all competed very well and, I think, proved to the other district teams we will contend for state qualifying berths.
“Our top two runners on both teams ran exceptionally – Cassidy Pribnow and Jaime Kennedy, Calvin Koziol and Jacob Lindgren. They again ran the last 1,000 meters very fast and reeled in a good bunch of competitors.
“However, I can’t forget what the other scorers did too. They just keep improving meet after meet!
“I have to believe they are now really hungry and excited for Thursday’s district.”
Pribnow was Boone Central’s top individual, placing 3rd in the Mid-State and 9th in the overall meet with a time of 16:43. Kennedy placed 6th in the conference and 13th overall in 16:58.
Koziol was again outstanding on the boys side, taking 5th in the Mid-State and 6th overall in 17:47. Lindgren placed 8th in the conference and 9th in the overall standings with a 19:08 clocking. Brody Kelley (19:13) was just seconds back, finishing 14th in the conference and 18th overall.
