Split votes decide two city issues

Two major issues were decided on split votes during the Albion City Council meeting Tuesday night, Feb. 8.

Selecting a firm to provide engineering and design work for the new city wastewater treatment plant resulted in two split votes, and was approved 3-2 with Mayor Jim Jarecki breaking the tie.

Later in the meeting, another tie vote was cast on a request from the Albion Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) to release sales tax funds for its 2011 project goals. The projects would require a total of $300,000, a majority of the $388,283 that has accumulated from sales taxes under the city’s LB 840 economic development program. However, the AEDC proposal included provisions to recoup most of these funds for future projects.

The council again split 2-2 on this proposal, and the mayor voted in favor of the proposal to break the tie.
