Boone Central Hosts Chilly, Wet Mid-State Golf

Kade Leetch tees off on hole #6Another golf tournament, another dreary day.
Boone Central hosted the annual Mid-State Conference boys golf tournament Monday at the Albion Country Club on a day that started with chilly temperatures, then turned wet as well around mid-day.
Braving generally miserable conditions, Wayne scored a solid team victory with a 329 team total. Battle Creek (344) edged Hartington Cedar Catholic (348) for second place.  Brad Lanman of Battle Creek and Wayne’s Collin Preston led individuals with 18-hole scores of 77, Lanman winning conference gold in a playoff.
Boone Central finished 6th in the tournament with a team total of 382. Cardinal junior Kade Leetch finished just outside the top 10 medalists, placing 11th with an 86.
Wayne was in control of the team race through most of the day. The Blue Devils led after one round with a 162 and came back with a 167 in the afternoon to turn back all challengers. Cedar Catholic (172) was eight strokes in front of Battle Creek (180) after the opening nine, but the Braves put together a 164 total in the second round to grab runner-up team honors. West Point Central Catholic (174) and Pierce (178) also looked like they might be factors through nine holes, but backslid in the second round.
The host Cardinals struggled to a 193 in their first round, then improved slightly in the afternoon drizzle (189). Leetch opened with a solid 41, but slipped to 43 on his back nine. Senior Trey Sorell was the only other Cardinal to break triple digits, shooting 49/47-96. Rounding out varsity scoring for Boone Central (top four comprise team total) were sophomore Hunter Henry (52/48-100), senior Curtis Thompson (54/46-100) and junior Sean Soll (51/50-101).
