Albion 16-Unders Open Softball Season 2-2

The Albion 16 & under softball team opened its 2011 summer season by rebounding from a pair of opening-day losses to even their record at 2-2 with victories over Pierce and Creighton.
Albion began its campaign May 23 with two very competitive losses to the host Columbus Bullets by scores of 7-6 and 7-5.
Trailing 1-0 in the opener, Albion exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The 16-unders took advantage of four Columbus errors and three walks in the inning and got big RBI base hits by Maria Glidden and Becca Reicks.
Albion’s 6-1 lead did not stand up for the win, however. The Bullets roared back in the bottom of the frame with six runs of their own, despite getting just a single base hit. Columbus took advantage of two batters hit by pitch and six walks to stage its rally.

Albion got untracked offensively early in the second contest, taking a 4-0 first-inning lead, sparked by Jordyn VanWormer’s two-run double.
Columbus fought back again with two runs in each of the first, second and third innings and a single tally in the fifth.

Albion posted its initial ‘W’ of the season the following night, riding a strong pitching performance by Nelson to a 5-1 victory at Pierce.
Nelson did not need a lot of run support in this one, allowing just a single run on five hits and striking out two during a seven-inning complete-game victory.

Albion posted win #2 May 31 by defeating Creighton 12-4 at Petersburg.
Albion again scored all the runs they would need in the opening frame. With VanWormer, Glidden and Shannon Stuhlmiller delivering singles and Kelsey Lee cracking a double, the 16-unders took a 5-0 lead, then boosted that to 10-2 in the second as Glidden and Lee banged out back-to-back doubles and Stuhlmiller added another RBI single.
