After splitting a doubleheader with Wayne June 22, the Cornerstone Legion Baseball Juniors lost in the Central City Tournament Friday to drop back to .500 (9-9) on the season.
Cornerstone’s week began in promising fashion with a 5-1 victory over Wayne at the Albion Sports Complex. Albion got a strong pitching performance from Calvin Koziol and solid defense behind him to hold the visitors scoreless until the final inning.
Cornerstone scored its first run in the third when Pierce Koch walked, advanced on a single by Logan Olson and came home on Koziol’s double. Cornerstone added another run the following frame with Brett Temme driving in Tyler Hedlund.
A two-run single by Olson put Albion in front 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Wayne got three consecutive singles to open the seventh and scored its only run before Koziol collected the final three outs in order.
Fortunes were reversed in the nightcap as Wayne rebounded to post a 10-1 victory.
Cornerstone scored in the bottom of the first inning, Hedlund driving in Olson with a single, but the local Juniors managed just four additional hits in the contest.
Wayne got all the runs it would need in the opening inning against Albion starter Temme, taking a 3-0 lead with three hits, a pair of walks and a Cornerstone error.
Cornerstone got off to a solid start in its tournament game at Central City Friday, June 24, before Shelton/Gibbon rocked the Juniors for 10 runs in the sixth inning of a 12-4 decision.
Albion took a 2-1 lead in the second when Koch plated Hedlund and Temme with a double. The local Juniors led 4-3 after three on RBI base hits by Chad Bode and Koch.
Hedlund pitched in and out of trouble, but held Shelton/Gibbon at bay through five innings. S/G’s offense caught fire in the sixth, and Hedlund and reliever Jacob Jarecki were unable to douse the flames before considerable damage was done.
