Boone County had a big spike in its net taxable retail sales figures for March, 2011.
The county recorded $103.9 million in net taxable retail sales for the month, representing an increase of more than 2,500 percent from the $3.8 million recorded in the same month a year earlier.
There is speculation that the spike in retail sales is mostly attributable to the new wind farm now under construction by Third Planet Windpower, LLC east of Petersburg. However, the Nebraska Department of Revenue is required to keep the identity of taxpayers confidential.
