Joel Sup of Albion and Jesse Luetkenhaus of Omaha were overall champions of the Albion Country Club’s annual Member-Guest Tournament last Saturday, Aug. 6.
The two won a final “shoot-out” among flight winners and runners-up in each of the three flights to determine the overall champion team.
A total of 34 two-person teams competed in this year’s tournament, playing 18 holes on Friday and the final 18 holes on Saturday. Flight winners were determined using a scoring system in which golfers were awarded one point for bogie, two points for par, four points for birdie and eight points for eagle.
Based on handicaps, each team was given a “quota” of points to earn both days. Teams exceeding their quota the first day were assigned a higher quota the second day, while teams not reaching their quota were assigned a lower quota the second day.
The course was set up with long roughs and difficult pin placements for the tournament.
The “shoot-out” featured an alternating shot format, and teams were gradually eliminated based on hole-by-hole results.
The final two teams in the playoff were Sup and Luetkenhaus, coming from second place in the second flight, and Jeff Bolin of Albion and his uncle, Dick Bolin of Gering, NE, who were second in the first flight.
The championship was determined on hole #9, the fourth playoff hole, where Sup and Luetkenhaus made par and Jeff and Dick Bolin made bogie.
