Lueken, Pospisil Share Late Model Title
There’s close. There’s really close. Then, there’s so close you end up calling it a draw in the end.
Such was the case at the Boone County Raceway in Albion Friday as Albion’s Mark Lueken won the Championship Night Late Model feature to forge a season point standings tie with race runner-up Tad Pospisil of Norfolk.
Pospisil entered Friday’s event with a one-point lead over Lueken, needing to finish ahead of the local favorite to claim his first BCR point championship.
He couldn’t pull it off.
With the two drivers starting from the front row in the 25-lap feature, Lueken outdueled Pospisil for the early lead and held a fairly comfortable advantage through the first half of the race. Pospisil was able to mount several challenges following cautions in the latter stages, but Lueken fought off each bid to take the checkers and knot the season point race at 492 points.
No set tiebreaker
The drama didn’t end there, as BCR officials had to sort out just who would be crowned 2011 LM champion – or if the drivers would share the title.
By IMCA rules, the duo would have remained tied even through the first two steps of the tiebreaker system – feature victories and second-place finishes. It would have gone to the third tiebreaker, where Lueken had one more third-place finish in 2011.
However, since the Limited Late Models are not an IMCA sanctioned class at the BCR, and since there was no previously established tiebreaker rule at the track, officials, in conjunction with the drivers, decided to have Lueken and Pospisil share the 2011 crown.
Well deserved. It was that kind of race.
