TIME OUT with Joe Flanagan

Exciting Times At Hand

“There’s a base hit into the gap in right field … the runner is rounding third base and heading for home!”
“That’s a nice drive right down the center of the fairway.”
“Strike three! She set ‘em down 1-2-3 that inning!”
“And the birdie putt drops to cap a nice round for the 2010 state placewinner.”
Yes, those could be some of the sounds heard this week as 2011 high school fall sports seasons get underway.
In just a week, you’ll be able to add the following …
“A high booming kick fielded at the five-yard line, returned to the 10, 15, now 20 …”
“The set made on the right side and, bam, the spike is down just inside the line for the final point.”
“A quick pass over the middle and he’s taken down immediately for just a short gain.”
Ah, you can almost picture the action already. Exciting times ahead!

The Albion News will once again provide full coverage of area teams in 2011-12. You’ll be able to follow the Cardinals Mavericks, Bulldogs, Bluejays, Beavers and Knights weekly.
We will officially begin the new high school athletic calendar next week with our annual Fall Sports Preview special.
Although some teams get an early start this week, the News staff, with such a short time between the beginning of fall practices and this week’s contests, decided to publish the special section August 31 in order to provide as much content as possible. The preview issue will again contain full color team photos, preview articles, schedules and special features.
Of course, our regular sports pages will also have coverage of this week’s season debuts. They certainly include some intriguing storylines …
How will Boone Central’s lady golfers fare in their quest for a third straight state title?
Can all-stater Troy McCuiston lead Newman Grove back to the playoffs?
How much improvement can the Cardinal softball team make with nine starters returning in 2011?
You’ll get the answers in these pages every week, plus much more.
Exciting times indeed!
