Boone Central’s girls golf team received a challenge from Valentine, but responded with a strong back nine to win its first tournament of the season Sept. 1 at Atkinson.
The Cardinals posted a 403 team total to defeat Valentine by seven strokes in the West Holt Invitational. Senior Britany Seda claimed the individual gold medal and junior teammate Amy Ahlers placed second.
Boone Central trailed the Badgers by three strokes through nine holes (200-203), but came back with a 200-210 advantage over the closing nine. Four of five Card golfers posted lower scores on the second nine holes.
Seda led all players with a 41/39-80 and Ahlers shot 44/42-86 to easily take tournament runner-up. Valentine’s Alex Bauer (94) and Michelle Renning (96) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Valentine had two additional medalists in sixth-place Shae DeNaeyer (102) and Shawna Wheeler (118), who finished 15th. Boone Central sophomore Faith Leetch placed 11th with a score of 58/56-114.
Although the Badgers had one more medalist than BC, the low totals posted by Seda and Ahlers were too much for Valentine to make up in the team race.
Senior Breann Thorberg rounded out Boone Central’s team total with a round of 62/61-123. Freshman Melissa Kyncl shot 64/60-124.
