Boone Central’s cross country teams ran into some very difficult early-season competition in the Norfolk Catholic Invitational at Skyview Lake Friday and Coach Tom Dickey, though seeing mixed results, felt his runners gave solid efforts.
The Cardinals finished fourth in the boys team standings and seventh in the girls division and were led individually by junior Calvin Koziol (3rd place) and senior Jaime Kennedy (8th place).
“This meet was loaded with outstanding competition, both teams and individuals,” Dickey noted. “I can’t be too disappointed. Comparing times with our past outings on that course, we did an excellent job – eight personal bests from runners who had competed there previously.
“I was very impressed with Calvin’s race. He used a nice steady pace and ran down several good runners. He’ really using his head to run wisely this year.
“The boys team worked well together and seem to be getting better day by day. We hope to get Brody Kelley at full strength soon, he’s really been struggling with congestion.
“Our gals ran well – seventh looks discouraging until you assess the competition and notic e we were just two points from fifth,” he added. “We just need to close some gaps and we’ll be fine.
“Sheldon Beierman was very impressive, winning the junior high girls race!”
