Area farmers concentrate on soybean harvest

Combine unloads soybeans into a grain trailer south of Albion on Monday afternoonFarmers in the Boone County area were harvesting both soybeans and corn during the past week, but their attention had turned mostly to soybeans by early this week.

“The beans are ready,” said one area elevator operator. “Some of the beans are a little small, but the quality appears to be good.”

Soybean yields were better that expected by some producers. Yields were averaging 50 to 60 bushels per acre dryland and 60 to near 70 bushels per acre on some irrigated fields. Test weights have been average.
