Boone Central’s young volleyball team concluded a 3-21 season by going 1-1 in the C1-9 Sub-District tournament Oct. 31 at Norfolk High School.
Boone Central opened the sub-district event with their second victory over Madison in as many weeks. After rallying from an 0-2 deficit to defeat the Dragons in the Mid-State Conference tournament, Boone Central was in more control during a 25-14, 22-25, 25-16, 25-10 victory at Norfolk.
As in the conference tournament, the Cardinals were defeated by Norfolk Catholic in the second sub-district match, this time by a score of 19-25, 13-25, 16-25.
Boone Central Coach Susan Roberts was pleased with the way her squad finished the season, winning three of their final seven matches.
“I am proud of the progress the girls and coaches made in the second half of the season,” she commented. “Our assistant coaches helped push the girls to execute better and play with more intensity at all three levels (varsity, reserve, freshmen).
“I believe the players made some big changes and progressed fundamentally. We saw improvement in every aspect of our game over the course of the season and that allowed us to be more competitive in our later matches.
“We will have our entire team returning except for seniors Jenna Lehmann and Kelli Larson,” Roberts noted. “Those two girls were a big part of our team this year with their play and strong leadership. Kelli was one of our most consistent servers and Jenna was a big force for us up front as our attacking and blocking leader.
“Our younger girls came a long way. I believe we have set ourselves up to start out at a much higher level next year.
“We look forward to joining with Newman Grove and taking the next steps in building a strong, competitive program.”
