Defense Keys Lady Card Wins

Defense, defense, defense.
The Boone Central girls basketball program has long built its foundation on that principle and it paid off this past week with two victories propelling the Lady Cardinals to 3-0 and a #10 ranking in the Omaha World-Herald’s Class C1 Top 10.
Boone Central opened its week with a 43-36 win at Crofton Dec. 6 in a game featuring teams that have enjoyed tremendous success in recent seasons. The Lady Cards grabbed another road victory Friday at Pierce (56-47) – their third straight Mid-State Conference triumph.

“This was a match-up of two teams that pride themselves on playing solid defense,” noted Cardinal Coach Mike Kennedy of the victory at Crofton. “Our run starting the fourth quarter, which stretched our lead to eight points, proved to be the decisive run of the game.”

Boone Central continued its solid early-season play at Pierce Friday, breaking open a tight contest with a 12-4 third-quarter run and nailing down the win with free throw accuracy in the fourth.

“A determined defensive effort, good free throw shooting and consistent scoring were the keys,” Kennedy opined. “We had good ball movement for the majority of the game and that led to good shot opportunities. That was an area of concern after the Crofton game, but our players really showed improvement in that area.”
