When Vetter Health Care Corp. closed its Friendship Villa Nursing Home in Spalding last October, it was seen as a major economic blow for the community.
Residents of the Spalding area have since been working to bring some economic development– including a possible new nursing home — back to the community.
A seven-member Spalding Community Development Committee is focused on re-establishing a nursing home in the town of 487 people.
A separate community group is working to find alternative uses for the 19,000-square-foot building that formerly housed the nursing home. Vetter Health Care Corp., owner of the former Friendship Villa, has not offered the building for sale. The company has stood firm on its decision not to sell the building for use as a long term care facility.
The nursing home operation had a total annual payroll of nearly $1 million.
