Lady Cardinals Soar To Mid-State Championship!

Jade GottierNot Dragons. Neither Blue Devils nor Bluejays. Not even a late winter storm that delayed the final games two days could stop the Boone Central Lady Cardinals from sweeping to the 2012 Mid-State Conference Basketball Tournament championship at Wayne State College.
Boone Central, ranked #1 in the Lincoln Journal-Star Class C1 Top 10 and #3 by the Omaha World-Herald boosted its season record to a sterling 19-2 Monday and claimed the coveted Mid-State crown with an emphatic 57-37 victory over Pierce (11-6, LJS #4).
BC swarmed the Lady Bluejays with relentless fullcourt pressure from the outset and never let up in a dominant title game performance.
“Our defense won us the conference championship tonight,” stated Boone Central Coach Mike Kennedy. “We played intelligent defense, rebounded the ball competitively and just kept competing for 32 minutes.
“It was a great win for Boone Central and we are excited to be conference champions – regular season and tournament!”

Boone Central reached Monday’s championship game after surviving a stern semi-final test against LJS #9 Wayne.
In a topsy-turvy contest filled with mini-runs by both teams, the Lady Cardinals turned to their defense in the waning moments to preserve a 44-41 victory.
“This game was everything we expected a Mid-State Conference semifinal to be,” acknowledged Kennedy. “There were runs from both teams and it came down to one possession in the end.
“We missed a handful of opportunities in the fourth quarter to put the game away, but had to rely on our defense to get a stop on the last couple of Wayne possessions and it did.”

Boone Central opened the Mid-State tournament with a 68-21 thrashing of Madison, a play-in game winner over Battle Creek.
The Lady Dragons had no answer for Lehmann inside as she tallied eight first-quarter points and 14 in the opening half. Kennedy added seven in the second period as the Cards took a 36-11 lead by halftime.
