Albion’s 18 & under softball team opened its 2012 summer season with three victories in five games May 23-31.
Albion began the campaign splitting a doubleheader at Columbus Lakeview May 23.
In their victory, the 18-unders used a big first inning for momentum in a 10-5 victory. Lakeview took the other contest, using the same formula of a fast start. The hosts scored all six of their runs in the first two innings and made an early 6-2 lead stand up for a 6-5 victory.
Albion had little trouble notching its second victory, pounding visiting Pierce 10-1 May 29.
Molt and Stuhlmiller each singled and scored in a three-run first and Albion added four runs in the second as Becca Reicks, Nelson and Stuhlmiller each singled and scored and Glidden rapped an RBI double.
Albion hosted Norfolk Kelly’s 16’s at Petersburg May 30 and rode another strong pitching performance to a 7-1 victory.
Taylor Pelster handled mound duties for the 18-unders, allowing one run on four hits and collecting three strikeouts.
The Albion 18-unders closed May with a 9-0 loss at O’Neill. The 18-unders threatened in the second, loading the bases with one out before going down with a strikeout and pop fly.
O’Neill built slim leads of 1-0 in the first and 3-0 in the third, then put the contest away with a flurry of three runs in each of the fifth and sixth frames.
