Boone Central volleyers off to flying start

A new season.
A new cooperative effort.
A new start for the Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team.
A very impressive start.
Boone Central/Newman Grove opened the 2012 volleyball campaign Thursday, August 30, with a straight-set victory at O’Neill – a solid first step in erasing the memories of the past two difficult seasons (3-21, 3-20).
Second-year Cardinal Coach Susan Roberts felt her squad was in sync and in control throughout the 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 victory.
“It was a great way to start our season,” Roberts commented. “We got out right away and played steady and controlled play all the way through the match.
“The girls played very aggressively and confidently. We played tough defense and served aggressively with 15 ace serves, which kept O’Neill out of system.
“We also attacked well, hitting at 79 percent.”
A well-balanced effort by the Lady Cards, who finished with 31 kills, 37 digs, the 15 ace serves, 27 assists and seven blocks.
Marissa Beierman led BC/NG with nine kills, while Jade Gottier added seven and Darienne Pokorny chipped in six. Pokorny and Emily Strong each had a pair of blocks, as Boone Central/Newman Grove displayed a solid game at the net.
