When it comes to senior seasons, high school athletes know competitive careers are running short and it’s time to step up with their best efforts.
Cardinal Calvin Koziol is doing just that early in 2012.
After placing third in the season-opening Boone Central Invitational, Koziol scored the first ‘major race’ win of his career this past Friday over a strong field in the Norfolk Catholic Invitational.
Koziol was not the only story of the day for Boone Central/Newman Grove, however. The Lady Cardinals claimed the girls team trophy and BC/NG runners reaped medals in all of the day’s races.
“This is surely one of the best days these kids have had in a Cardinal uniform!” said Coach Tom Dickey. “We collected 13 medals from a big invitational – a sure sign of steady improvement.
“We had some really outstanding individual performances, but it was the teamwork I was especially pleased with. Every race featured a nice pack of Boone Central/Newman Grove runners who worked together from starting gun to finish. The energy one race created just oozed over into the next.
“Our kids are really excited right now!”
Dickey was pleased to see his senior team leader highlight the meet and impressed with the strong showing by a young girls squad that was paced by a pair of precocious freshmen.
