Calvin Koziol could get used to this.
One week after winning his first major cross country meet gold medal, the Cardinal senior grabbed a second straight with a victory in Thursday’s Scotus Invitational at Columbus.
Koziol led an overall impressive effort by Boone Central/Newman Grove runners as both girls and boys teams placed second and four Cards recorded top ten individual finishes.
“As a complete team, we had another exceptional day,” praised Coach Tom Dickey. “Before the meet we discussed some goals to make sure we could compete well with the tough Scotus teams. We didn’t exactly accomplish those goals, but we certainly took a huge step closer to them!
“Right down the line, I was pleased with the progress of our kids. We had a nice string of personal bests on the course, but the best thing was just how competitive we were.”
Koziol basically ran away from the boys field Thursday over the “true cross country course” northeast of Columbus, winning in 16:56.
Trevor Salber scored a top ten finish, placing 8th in a personal best 18:07, and Shanno finished 12th with a personal best time of 18:25.
The BC/NG Lady Cardinals came up just seven points short of host Scotus as freshman teammates Hannah Schmitz and Sheldon Beierman placed among the top ten medalists.
Schmitz took 8th in a time of 16:57 (BC #6 all-time on course) and Beierman was 10th in 17:01 (#8). Rounding out a strong team effort were Catherine Weeder (14th, 17:14, #9), Starman (17th, 17:34) and Kendra Gonzalez (22nd, 17:52).
