Cardinal harriers continue to improve

Catherine Weeder (l), Hannah SchmitzCoaches always hope athletes will improve as a season progresses. The Boone Central/Newman Grove cross country teams are making Coach Tom Dickey happy.
Boosted by numerous personal-best performances, the BC/NG boys finished atop the team standings in Friday’s Boone Central Individual Invitational and the Cardinal girls placed second. Boone Central/Newman Grove also had a top five overall runner in both the boys and girls races.
“The cooler weather did nothing but help our kids run faster Friday,” commented Dickey. “We had a ton of personal bests and that led to some very good improvement in our team dynamics. I’m really happy to see this progress and to know just how hard the kids are working to improve.
“It looks like we have two very competitive teams that could make an impact in the latter parts of the season.”
Individual accomplishments on the Albion Country Club course left plenty of accolades for Dickey to pass around.
“Some very major personal bests nearly helped rewrite the Albion/BC top ten list for girls,” he praised. “Catherine Weeder, Hannah Schmitz, Sheldon Beierman and Kendra Gonzalez have all worked their way onto the list, which is quite impressive!
“Calvin Koziol didn’t run his fastest race on this course, but he did run a very intelligent race against some very good competition. The rest of the boys group had very impressive times and personal bests.”
