Cardinal volleyers trending up

A much-improved Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team continued to make strides this past week with a strong showing in triangular matches at Hastings.
The Lady Cardinals scored a 2-1 victory over host Adams Central and dropped a tough, competitive 2-1 decision to 10-3 St. Paul, playing their best volleyball to date, according to Coach Susan Roberts.
Boone Central/Newman Grove fought off an Adams Central challenge to score a 25-16, 22-25, 25-15 victory. The Cardinals battled St. Paul, coming up just short in a 26-24, 22-25, 23-25 decision.
“The varsity played two well-executed and competitive games,” Roberts praised. “We defeated Adams Central and played a very well-balanced game, attacking with .202 efficiency, serving 94 percent with eight aces, getting up 51 digs and setting 30 assists.
“We continued to play well against a tough St. Paul team. We came up a little short of our goals for execution on attacking and serve receive in that match and it kept us just out of reach of victory in the final two sets.
“I feel like we played our best volleyball to date in these two matches,” Roberts continued. “We are playing more consistently offensively and defensively and have been very competitive in all of our games.”
