Cardinal softball season ends at district

The Boone Central softball team posted a 1-2 mark in the C-4 District tournament at Wisner Oct. 4-5, finishing the 2012 season with an overall record of 12-15.
The Lady Cardinals suffered a pair of losses to host Wisner-Pilger sandwiched around an exciting victory over Mid-State Conference rival Pierce that extended BC’s district stay to day two.
Boone Central opened C-4 play on a breezy, chilly Thursday morning with a tough 8-5 loss to the Wisner-Pilger Lady Gators.
Becca Reicks tripled and scored to give the Cards a 4-2 edge in the second and Wisner-Pilger tied the see-saw contest with single runs in the third and fourth.
Both teams added a run in the fifth and the Lady Gators edged in front with another in the sixth. Wisner-Pilger tacked on two runs in the final frame, then set down three straight Boone Central batters in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.
Boone Central stayed alive in the double-elimination format Thursday afternoon, defeating the Pierce Bluejays 10-8. The Cardinals used a quick start – leading 8-2 after four innings – then held off a late rally attempt by Pierce.
The Lady Cards added two runs in the second, then answered Pierce’s initial runs with tallies by Miranda Ketteler, Ashlynn Baker and Niki Mewhirter in the third to take a 7-2 lead.
Pierce fought back with five base hits and five runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one and, once again, Boone Central responded in the bottom of the inning, Molt and Haeger scoring as Lee, Ketteler and Baker rapped consecutive hits.
Pierce trimmed the margin again with two in the sixth, but Finnegan retired the Jays 1-2-3 in the seventh to seal the victory.
After banging out 23 hits in Thursday’s games, Boone Central’s bats deserted them Friday, as Wisner-Pilger’s Miller stymied the Cards in a 7-1 elimination-game victory.
“It was not the way we wanted our season to end, but I’m proud of all the girls accomplished as a team this season,” Olson said.
