BC/NG volleyers lose to Cadets, split in Mid-State start

Marissa Beierman makes blockAfter losing a tough decision to West Point-Beemer on Senior/Parents Night in Albion last week, the Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team opened play in the annual Mid-State Conference Tournament Monday.
The Lady Cardinals defeated O’Neill 3-0 in an opening play-in game at Norfolk Catholic High School Monday afternoon, then were defeated 3-0 by the host Lady Knights (24-1, ranked #2 in Omaha World-Herald) in the full first round that evening.
Boone Central/Newman Grove (10-12) played Wayne in a consolation game Tuesday. The winner will play in the tournament’s fifth-place match Friday at Pierce (4:30 p.m.).

BC/NG dropped a competitive, but disappointing 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 25-25 decision to visiting West Point-Beemer Oct. 16 after winning the opening set.
“The girls were competitive and executed well in all aspects of our game except serve receive,” commented Cardinal Coach Susan Roberts. “When we played the ball up on serve receive, we did a good job and ran our offense very well. In fact, we had our best offensive game of the season, hitting .237 with 51 kills and a 34 set assist percentage.
“The problem we had was not adjusting to some tough servers from West Point-Beemer and letting ourselves get aced 15 times. Those aces had a double effect on us – they were not only a point for the other team, but also killed any momentum we were trying to build and mentally wore on us in the last three sets.”
