Freshman Schmitz Cross Country All-State

Hannah SchmitzThe 2012 cross country season was very successful for Coach Tom Dickey’s Boone Central/Newman Grove teams.
A final highlight was provided last week when freshman Hannah Schmitz, a fourth-place medalist in the state meet, was honored with Nebraska Coaches Association Class C Super State and All-State awards.
Schmitz, who set a new girls school record in her first varsity season, was one of four runners receiving Super State recognition in Class C, along with Gabriella Gracia of Holdrege, Morgan Benesch of Scotus and Arlington’s Jacquelyn Dam. Those competitors were also members of the NCA Class C All-State team.
The Nebraska Coaches Association has established guidelines and chooses All-State teams in those sports not receiving recognition by Nebraska daily newspapers.
Schmitz and senior Calvin Koziol were named Boone Central/Newman Grove’s 2012 Outstanding Runners following the season. Koziol was the boys’ Mid-State Conference champion, C-3 District champion, an Academic All-State selection and team Career Conquest Leader.
That duo led Cardinal teams to impressive results, especially in the all-important stretch run of the season. Both BC/NG teams placed second in the Mid-State Conference. The Cardinal boys were C-3 District champions and finished 7th in the state meet. The Lady Cardinals were third in the C-3 District, then capped the season by placing third in the Class C state meet.
