BC/NG boys off to sluggish court start

Tyler HedlundOuch.
Not the start the Boone Central/Newman Grove basketball team was looking for.
The Cardinals opened the 2012-13 season Friday at Hartington, dropping a 54-49 decision to the Cedar Catholic Trojans. BC/NG couldn’t rebound Saturday in Albion as visiting Lakeview pulled out a 36-28 victory.
“While we are disappointed in the outcome of the first two games, we have no time to worry about those games,” noted Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Dan Zoucha. “We have two more games this week with Central City and Pierce and that is where our focus must be.”
The Cardinals travel to Central City Thursday before hosting Mid-State Conference rival Pierce Friday in Albion.
H.C.C. 54, BC/NG 49
Boone Central/Newman Grove did some good things in it’s season opener at Hartington C.C. Unfortunately, shooting well was not among them.
BC/NG shot just 29 percent overall – 26 percent on three-point tries – and made only 6-of-14 free throws (43%), negating a strong rebounding (42-36 advantage) and defensive (10 steals) performance.
Lakeview 36, BC/NG 28
Home court familiarity did not prove to be the answer for Boone Central/Newman Grove Saturday in a 36-28 loss to Lakeview, as Friday’s shooting frustrations only multiplied.
Shots in the lane, shots behind the arc and shots in between simply would not fall for the Cardinals. BC/NG shot just 21 percent from the field – 1-of-16 from three-point range – and made only 5-of-10 free throws.
