Two seniors who helped lead Boone Central/Newman Grove to the 2012 Class C1 state championship game have joined the list of Cardinals who have received All-State football awards.
Beau Bremer and Tanner Mazour were announced this past weekend as members of the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star Class C1 All-State teams. Both players were also honored on the Grand Island Independent All-Heartland Super Squad.
Bremer (6-7, 240), the son of Kandi and Todd Bremer, was selected as an offensive lineman by the World-Herald and Journal-Star and a defensive lineman in the Independent. Along with helping pave the way for a Cardinal offense that rushed for 3,143 yards (6.1 per attempt) in 2012, the imposing senior was in on 79 total tackles, 21 unassisted, and led Boone Central/Newman Grove with seven sacks.
Mazour (5-9, 180), son of Kay and Dr. John Mazour, was chosen as a quarterback on the All-State teams and a defensive back in the All-Heartland selections after excelling in nearly every phase of the game during BC/NG’s 11-2 campaign. The quick, shifty senior ran for 930 yards on 127 carries, completed 111-of-197 passes for 1,588 yards, totaled 37 touchdowns (24 rushing), made 57 tackles (24 unassisted), registered 3.5 sacks, grabbed two interceptions and returned 15 punts for 296 yards (19.7 average).
Three Boone Central/Newman Grove players were picked for the All-Heartland Second Team – seniors Blake Slizoski (RB) and Hunter Henry (P) and junior Derek Gentrup (WR). Slizoski led Cardinal rushers with 1,007 yards in 164 attempts (6.6 per carry), Henry averaged 37 yards on 29 punts and Gentrup caught a team-high 35 passes for 515 yards and two touchdowns.
That trio of Cardinals, along with senior Alex Wiese and junior Tyler Hedlund received all-state honorable mention by the OWH and LJS. Wiese and Hedlund also received honorable mention in the GII.
